Cogeneration is the simultaneous production of electricity while capturing useful heat or steam for industrial processes. By capturing and using energy that would have been lost as waste heat, cogeneration leads to increased energy efficiency and reduced GHG emissions. ExxonMobil has interests in approximately 5,400 megawatts of cogeneration capacity in 100 + installations around the world, equivalent to the annual energy needed to power 2.5 million U.S. homes. Our cogeneration facilities enable the avoidance of approximately 6 million metric tons per year of GHG emissions.

In Europe, ExxonMobil has several cogeneration units. The ultra-high-efficiency Cogen at Antwerp refinery became operational in 2009 and has reduced CO2 emissions from the site to levels comparable to taking 90,000 cars off roads. With a total power output capacity of 130 Megawatts, the unit produces more electricity than the total requirement of the Antwerp refinery and the two polymer production plants in Meerhout and Zwijndrecht.
