Description
REFHYNE is a European consortium between Shell (Shell Germany and Shell Energy Europe), ITM Power Ltd (UK), SINTEF (Norway), Sphera (Germany) and Element Energy (UK). It is receiving a grant from the EU FCHJU (Fuel Cell Hydrogen Joint Undertaking).
The 10 MW electrolyser in the Shell Rhineland refinery is being constructed and the equipment is currently being installed. It will start operations in early 2021 and it will be also then the world-wide largest PEM electrolyser.
In operation it will produce about 4 tons of green hydrogen daily and on an annual basis about 1300 tons per year. The hydrogen will be primarily used within the refinery, but the electrolyser will be also used for grid balancing purposes. The supply of the fuel cell grade hydrogen to the transport sector is also envisaged.
