Description
As part of its range of low carbon technologies, ArcelorMittal is building its Steelanol demonstration project that recycles carbon into sustainable, advanced bio-ethanol.
They capture carbon from an industrial source and recycle it, just like with glass, paper and plastic
- Investment cost is 120 million of euro
- 90 000 Nm³ waste gas/h
- Production of 64 000 ton/year ethanol
- Steelanol is eliminating the GHG emissions of 80 million liter of gasoline over the total chain.
- Start production 2020.
It can be rolled out later in other countries in other plants and can be combined with other carbon capture and use technologies. When all possible technologies of the smart carbon strategy towards a CO2 neutral steel production would be implemented, the-use of waste carbon gas instead of incinerating can realise CO2 emission reduction (>80%) while producing valuable Chemicals.
If available later this is also the preparation for potential CCS.
